About the Client

Our client is a leading provider of integrated payment and frictionless commerce solutions, serving over 100,000 customers with a reliable payment ecosystem. Partnering with more than 2,000 key distributors, they target high-growth verticals such as healthcare, education, government, utilities, and manufacturing. They enable secure, efficient transactions through multiple channels, including credit/debit cards, ACH, and checks. With innovative technology and a focus on continuous improvement, the client delivers a trusted, state-of-the-art payment experience that meets the evolving needs of modern commerce.

Challenge

Faced with outdated legacy systems that delayed onboarding and hindered operational efficiency, our client envisioned a modern, secure digital ecosystem for utility billing and collection management. They aimed to streamline processes for municipalities, private utilities, and citizens while introducing features such as autopay enrollment, real-time notifications, and multilingual support. The project was designed to process millions of transactions annually, ensuring reliable revenue generation and improved service delivery across 26 states. This transformation was intended to enhance citizen engagement and significantly reduce manual intervention.

Solutions Implemented

At the outset, Successive Digital performed a comprehensive analysis of the client’s outdated legacy billing system to identify gaps in scalability, security, and operational efficiency. Engaging key stakeholders to understand their business vision and challenges, we recognized the urgent need for a modern, agile solution. We proposed a holistic transformation leveraging serverless microservices and advanced DevOps practices. This approach enabled rapid, secure deployments, robust monitoring, and seamless scalability, ultimately bridging the technical gap to deliver a future-proof digital payment platform.

  • Automated Infrastructure with AWS CloudFormation We modernized the legacy architecture by introducing Infrastructure-as-Code using AWS CloudFormation. This enabled consistent, repeatable deployments across environments, significantly reducing manual configuration errors and accelerating infrastructure setup.
  • Serverless Microservices Architecture To improve agility and scalability, we adopted a serverless approach using AWS Lambda for backend logic and AWS API Gateway for secure API management. AWS S3 was leveraged for durable, scalable storage, forming a cost-effective and resilient backbone for the digital payment platform.
  • Event-Driven Orchestration with SQS & EventBridge We decoupled services by implementing AWS SQS for asynchronous messaging, improving reliability and fault tolerance. Using AWS EventBridge, we established an event-driven architecture that enabled real-time workflows across microservices, resulting in faster and smarter system responses.

CI/CD Pipeline Automation with Jenkins

We streamlined development and deployment by building a robust CI/CD pipeline using Jenkins. This automated builds, testing, and deployments, allowing for faster release cycles and improved developer productivity without compromising reliability.

Quality Assurance with SonarQube Integration

To uphold high code quality and security standards, we integrated SonarQube into our CI/CD pipeline. This enabled real-time code analysis, vulnerability scanning, and enforcement of coding best practices, ensuring every release was production-ready and compliant.

Continuous Monitoring & Secure Content Delivery

To maintain operational visibility and application performance, AWS CloudWatch was used for real-time monitoring and alerts. For global, low-latency content delivery, we integrated AWS CloudFront, while AWS WAF and Secrets Manager ensured application-layer security and protection of sensitive data.

Outcome

Explore key outcomes and business impact delivered

Error Reduction

Automated deployments and continuous monitoring reduced error rates by 90%, ensuring high system reliability and minimal downtime.

Operational Efficiency

The modernized system boosted process efficiency by 80%, streamlining billing workflows and significantly reducing onboarding times.

Scalability

The transition to a serverless architecture supports over 8 million annual transactions, enabling seamless performance and robust revenue generation.

Enhanced User Engagement

Intuitive interfaces and multilingual support have markedly improved citizen satisfaction and accessibility to digital payment services.

“We built a CI/CD pipeline using GitHub Actions and ArgoCD to accelerate development and ensure reliable deployments. Code changes triggered automated builds, tests, and Docker image deployments to Amazon ECR. Initially, we validated this setup on Amazon ECS (Fargate) with a lightweight container orchestration environment. As our platform matured and scaled—supporting over 100 microservices—we migrated to Amazon EKS for greater control and scalability. Post-transition, ECS components were decommissioned to optimize costs and streamline operations.”
